Groundbreaking Ceremony Celebrates Beginning of Construction at Weavers Way Co-op in Chestnut Hill

PHILADELPHIA – November 17, 2009 –Weavers Way Co-op will celebrate the beginning of construction on its newest location at 8418 Germantown Avenue with a Groundbreaking Ceremony on Friday, Nov. 20 at 3:30 p.m. State Rep. Dwight Evans, whose support helped make the project a reality, will be among the VIPs making a brief statement. Other invited guests include Mayor Michael Nutter, State Rep. John Myers, State Rep. LeAnna Washington, State Rep. Cherelle Parker, Councilwoman Donna Miller, Councilman William K. Greenlee, Councilman Bill Green, and Councilman Frank Rizzo, Jr. and representatives from Weavers Way Co-op and the Chestnut Hill community. The ceremony will be followed by a brief tour of the site. Light refreshments will be served.

The new store will be located on the site of the former Caruso’s Market, continuing a tradition of grocery stores on that site going back over 100 years. Weavers Way purchased the building in February, 2009 and expects to open in March or April of 2010.

Founded in 1973 by a group of neighbors in Mt. Airy, Weavers Way Co-op has grown into Northwest Philadelphia institution with 3,600 member households, 70 employees and annual sales of $8 million, with stores in Mt. Airy and West Oak Lane, and opening in Chestnut Hill early in 2010. We also operate a growing urban farm program, including the Mort Brooks Memorial Farm at Awbury Arboretum, Henry Got Crops at Saul High School, and Hope Garden at Stenton Family Manor Homeless Shelter. Weavers Way Co-op is a great source of reasonably priced, fresh, local, and organic foods and other unique products, and is also an integral part of the community.     I think this is fantastic!! I am very excited about W.W. coming onto the the Ave, and I believe it is going to be one of the integral facets that turns the retail and real estate economy around in Chestnut Hill.
